Suffolk Coast adventures: Aldeburgh
OH and I escaped the city for a couple of days to the Suffolk coast. Our first stop was Aldeburgh, somewhere I had always wanted to visit mainly to see the Maggi Hambling shell. However before we went anywhere we had a very classy lunch of a pasty and a tin of Adnams G&T on the beach. We then struggled along the shingle towards the shell.
The beach front reminded me our trip to Dungeness a couple of years ago though obviously it wasn't as remote. We were sad to see these boats were left to rot on the shingle.
But it was still a working seafront - just look at the size of those tires which roll the boats out to sea past the shingle.
As with many seaside towns the gulls were everywhere - and it was the time of year when the youngsters were almost as big as the parents.
I found the abandoned boats incredibly romantic though they were quite a picturesque as the ones on Dungeness
We finally made it to the shell sculpture (walking on shingle certainly burns the calories!) but annoyingly this child had decided it was going to use it as a climbing frame and didn't look as if he was going to come down anytime soon so I had to snap 'with enfant'.
The behind view was without child though so happy days!
Wandering back up along the path (we couldn't face walking back along the shingle) you can see the small diggers used to get the boats out to see.
Also on the beach front were numerous fish huts where you could buy the catch of the day - sadly for OH I'm not a fish kinda gal....
Although it was a grey and mainly cloudy day it was still very humid so there were lots of brave souls enjoy the beach and even going for a swim. To be honest it did look tempting though I hadn't take my swimming costume.....
And finally there was this amazing medieval building which turned out to be the local museum. Wasn't something I was expecting so it was a nice surprise. So there we have it, our first day in Suffolk. More to follow soon.
